'Astyanax' Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax)
I spot only a few of the Red-spotted Purple butterflies each year. They don't seem to stay in one place for very long and seem to prefer landing on the ground (wood chips or gravel) instead of flowers.
All of the photos displayed here were taken in Midtown Atlanta, GA. This year I had my earliest sighting in April, and the most recent sighting was 26 September 2004.
